Generally there are three video generator types: video editors, AI avatars and video GenAI tools. You are currently in the video genAI section of our video generator comparison.

Video GenAI GENERATE A NEW VIDEO SEQUENCE FROM A PROMPT OR IMAGE

generate a video emoji

Most famous Tool: Runway, Kling 1.6, SoraAI

Use cases: Creative output, short movies, ads, music videos, (later: movies)

What it does: Similar to image generators like Dall E or Midjourney, these tools can create a completely new video clip of anything you can dream of. They are still in their infancy, allowing us to create only a few seconds at a time, but most likely one day they will create the movies we watch.

Who will love this: For all creatives who don’t expect for things to work perfectly. Brands and marketers will still struggle with consistency: tools can only make the main character consistent, but not yet others or the scenery.

About Video GenAI tools

If you asked me in 2024, during the big SoraAI hype, I would have attested that Hollywood is doomed. What had happened?

OpenAI released a few high-quality video clips generated by SoraAI, which looked as if the tool was capable of creating the most amazing lifelike videos with unprecedented realism or surrealism.

Today we know that video GenAI tools have trouble creating everything with consistency: main protagonist, and secondary characters plus background & scenery. Professional video GenAI applications can always just do one element well, and until we get there that all three elements are consistent over a longer period of time, the technology has to become much better for realistic video generation.

Now that SoraAI was actually released as a video generator tool, not just the probably thousand times prompted results (clips), Hollywood is happy to see that their video production teams will not be out of work as quickly as we all thought. The AI-powered video tool was not able to create the impressive worlds OpenAI has pretended it could. It even fell behind tools like Google's Veo or Flux AI in the video generators marketplace.

Is Video GenAI Glitter Not Gold?

But of course, video GenAI is still magical: finally we can create videos we didn't even dream of. Very fitting that Luma AI calls their video GenAI tool 'dream machine' for text-to-video creation.

We can dream up any scene, action, background or film style through AI video generation. Just limited to 5 or 10 seconds. And often enough video GenAI doesn't exactly generate our exact dream but a variation of it. Runway still tends to fizzle out humans that are supposed to move. Flux has issues fetching data. Newer video generation models promise improved capabilities.

What Are New Video GenAI Features in 2025?

The presents we received this year under the video GenAI tree were camera movements, better delivery on perspectives, start-and end frame features (where you give the tool end or start frame or both, kind of like a guard rail to not go off too much) - all enhancing video content creation.

Also I've noticed video generators become increasingly restrictive with their free plans lately. AI-generated videos are expensive for companies like Runway and other video GenAI platforms because they require tremendous processing power for high-quality video creation.

When using these video tools, you don't just pay with money, but also with your time. Video generation can take up to several minutes, depending on how many video clips you're creating in parallel through these AI video generators.

What is the Best Video GenAI tool?

I personally love Kling AI for generating videos, but this changes constantly, as this type of video generators just like others keep releasing new models almost weekly. If you don't want to keep on changing your subscriptions, just go with Freepik and their video generator tool box. They let you access almost all important models (except for SoraAI) plus many experimental models for comprehensive video creation.

Freepik also has an image generator which is based on Flux AI, so you can do everything in one tool: generate an image and right away turn it into a video via the image-to-video feature, streamlining the entire video creation process.

Conclusion

If you think now: but Freepik doesn't have its own model, why did you add them to this category? You are absolutely right. But it does combine all relevant models and makes the creation process so easy and fun that it absolutely made sense to give it first place. If there is something one tool can't do -for example switching perspectives with Veo2- you can just create the frame with another tool. Also having such an amazing image generator with Flux AI in the same tool, makes Freepik especially fun to play around with. It even lets you test experimental models and take a look into where video GenAI is going. The only downside I found was that the sound FX feature doesn't work properly yet.

Conclusion

Oh I laughed so hard about my first generation with the start to end frame function. I had uploaded two screenshot of myself in an online meeting, just to see what the tool would make me do. It added a very funny lip sync, which made me look as if I am singing in the video. I tested this feature some more and I am quite impressed by Kling 1.6. I also love that this tool allows 15 different camera movements or perspectives, which is what has given me the most headaches recently with video generation. I feel like they are focusing a lot on community building, similar to midjourney for image gen. Overall this is the top runner for me at the moment.

Conclusion

I heard good things about Google's Veo2, but wasn't able to access it directly, because VideoFX is not available in Europe yet. I usually use the same simple prompt to give the tool a bit of freedom of interpretation and see what it does with this freedom. The first creation reminded me of early pika labs creations: a low quality animated clip. Quite disappointing. But then I added the style "photo realistic" which made it much better. Nice surprise: this is the first generation which added a camera movement by itself. The "User Experience" rating is so low because one generation cost me $2.50 via fal.ai

Conclusion

This tool for me doesn't really come up to the expectation and the huge hype around it. But it has a lot of potential. It scored the same as Pika Labs, but I prefer it because the generated video isn't just animation style, unlike Pika's. LumaAI is better at showing the requested movement, but it's not perfect either. I have generated a few very weird-looking things with it. And an extra smiley with a tear for not letting me download those weird generations on the free plan.

Conclusion

I like Hunyuan but I wouldn't say it massively sticks out among all other video generators. The most unique feature is that we can choose between 5 different perspectives, a feature only a few video generators have picked up on yet. Kling 1.6 offers 15 with movements. Also I didn't like that the free plan with its 1 credit doesn't allow testing the video generation, which costs 12 credits. This was the only tool that created an Asian lady shaking the cyborgs hand, no wonder, as the parent company Tencent Holdings is Chinese. Refreshing to see the ethnicity mix!

Conclusion

Runway was one of the first video genAI tools I have tested about one year ago and back then the performance was impressive. But now companies like Kling, Luma and Google with Veo2 have worked hard in outpacing them and they absolutely did. It frustrates me that Runway still has a hard time making characters move in a natural way. Still many creations end up in a dissolving state. For now I will ignore Runway, but I hope they come back!

Conclusion

After 2 animation-style videos, I prompted for a photo-realistic video, but Pika seems to be unable to do that. I feel like the lady is trying to mumble something, but her lips are not moving enough. Nice fact: Pika Labs is actually a non-profit organization and a community of AI enthusiasts.

FAQ online video editors

Which AI video genAI is best?

That’s hard to say, it depends what you need and also keeps changing constantly with the release of new models. Favorites in the video community are at the moment Runway (has been around the longest) and Kling (due it’s advanced features and capabilities).

Can AI generate video from text?

Absolutely! That's mostly what AI-driven video software such as Runway or pikalabs do. You enter a prompt (add variables like style, background and perspective) and see what comes out. The first sequence will probably not be perfect right away. If there is something that you don't want then add it as a negative prompt.
