The Interview

What's your job and how does it involve AI?

With Videostate, I help creators to improve the state of their videos.
I do that by sharing knowledge on Linkedin (daily posts) and on my YouTube channel (weekly), online coaching, video editing services and soon a video course.

I cover everything in the realm of video creation. From creative concepts and scripting to creating videos with AI tools to putting content in front of an audience via e.g webinars.
So video creation from A-Z.

What's the craziest thing about AI you've heard so far?

One of the craziest things I heard was someone who created a fan-made commercial for a famous brand with AI and was invited to join the company soon afterwards.
We'll see way more AI commercials in the near future.

Which Ai tool do you personally use the most?

Runway Labs. Gen-2 is their advanced AI video model where you can create, edit and render video scenes. I like their motion design features, for instance, Motion Brush where you can animate still images into stunning videos.

How much time do you approximately save daily by using AI tools?

I recently created a short AI trailer for my YouTube channel in 3 hours with AI. I think I would have spent at least 50 hours creating the same video with traditional tools. Another example is voice-over work. ElevenLabs is a great place to get a voice-over in seconds. Copy-paste your script, select the right voice, and hit generate.

Do you prefer: ChatGPT or Bard?

I've been using ChatGPT since it came out in November 2022 so I'd go for that!
In the beginning, I was using CGPT to create the outline for the videos on my YouTube channel. I was also using it for scripts, refining ideas, drafting social media posts, and just for brainstorming.

I like that you can have an actual conversation with it. CGPT can really help to get to the essence of an idea you have in your mind and to go into multiple creative directions from there.

What area should AI enthusiasts keep an eye on in the near future?

AI video! 2024 is the year when AI video is going to change things around. The amount of AI commercials and AI trailers I see on LinkedIn has increased. The quality is also beautiful. There is a huge difference when you look back to one year ago, February 2023 when AI video started out (a lot of nightmarish content!). Right now, AI allows you even to upscale HD / Full HD content to 2K or even 4K, so it's crazy.

AI video also leads to massive creative bursts among people. This weekend, I was participating in the GEN:24 short AI film festival by Runway Labs. 100s of people from all over the world joined to create a short film in... just 48 hours. I've never experienced such a creative vibe. Everyone was rooting for each other, it felt more like we collaborated than competed. The submissions are all mindblowing!

Any tips, tricks, or hacks regarding the use of AI?

Yes, to stay within the realm of AI video, I'd like to share a hack anyone can use to start creating AI commercials or trailers:

Step 1: Script.
Generate your story in CGPT. Prompt it for an outline, characters, story, etc. Ask CGPT to build your story around 'The Hero's Journey' to have a great storytelling framework.

Step 2: Imagery.
Generate the images of your story one by one in Krea.AI. It's a free tool with unlimited renders, so you can get started. They have real-time generation which helps to get close to your desired images. Don't forget to enhance and upscale the image. It will make it very sharp.

Step 3: Video
Generate your AI video by uploading the images in Runway Labs. Here you can animate the images (even parts of them with Motion Brush). You can download them as scenes of 4 seconds. Afterward, use a video editor (Clipchamp is free and browser-based) to put your video together. Don't forget the soundtrack!

You just made a video with AI!

What AI tool should be invented for you?

I'm very happy with the options we have today! As a kid, I always wanted to work in film, and the fact that it's possible now to generate beautiful video content with AI makes me very enthusiastic. If I had to insist, video content is now max 4 seconds. So to make a feature-length film of 90 minutes, you need 1350 rendered scenes. That still takes up a lot of time, but will get better in the coming months!

Love or hate: Technology smarter than humans aka AGI?

For centuries, technology has always been a tool for humans to achieve a certain goal.
We as humans have a function at the beginning of that action. Whether it's making a fire, driving a car, or calling someone on our phones. I think that's no different with prompting right now.

So what happens when that line fades? When the phone decides itself that it should call the doctor because it knows your blood pressure is high? Think of that email you want to send and it's being created on your computer while you walk outside.

I think at some point, it will lead to an overdrive, our brains will not be able to function normally anymore, it's always creating, producing chaos as a result.

Do you believe AI will bring a bigger technological revolution than the internet?

It will be very different. First of all, the speed of adoption will be faster as AI is more accessible. In the 90's, you had to buy a modem first to get started. Now, you don't need anything to start with AI.
An the other side, the internet made the world a small village, we became connected to everyone. That is massive. AI will use that network to bring more value to that connection.

AI democratizes creativity; it allows anyone without design talent or background to tell a story. The internet just facilitated the connection in the beginning.
With all the excitement, I also think we have the responsibility to shape how we work with AI for future generations. But that's probably what they said with the rise of the internet at the beginning 2000s too…

Who'll make the race for spearheading AI in 10 years?

Microsoft

Is AI more of a chance or a challenge for humanity?

It's both a chance and a challenge.
It reminds me of the movie 'Sphere'. A team of scientists discovers an alien artifact that allows them to bring their visions to life. It's an underwater-horror movie so guess what happens. But I think in essence, it's pretty accurate. What do we choose when we have the power to create and the power to destroy?

We need proper training and education to understand how AI works and what influences it has. The government should take a leading role in understanding that.
Beyond that, I believe AI can be a chance for humanity to create beautiful things.

Where will AI develop in the short-term?

For AI video, I believe that in 2024:

  • we will see an increase in apps where you can create videos. The amount of qualitative apps is rising, but the space is not overflown yet.

  • Most of the time, you can render up to 4 seconds per scene. This time will be higher later on in the year.

  • We will see the developments of the first streaming platform with 100% AI content. AI television stations are being conceptualized left and right already. All that content needs to be centralized somewhere.

  • Social media channels will most likely integrate AI-content creation features. Why not create on the platform immediately instead of distributing your content currently?
