AI Tool Review: Sora 2

What is Sora 2?

Sora 2 is one of my favorite AI video generation models. Even months after its launch in 2025 it still does various things better than other models in its class, including Google's Veo 3. I regularly test AI video tools for my comparison page and most recently challenged 6 models with the same 4 prompts (link to the blog). Sora 2 nailed 2 out of 4 missions better than anything else I tested. That surprised me.

Don't get it twisted with the Sora social media platform, which was recently closed down by its makers of OpenAI and ChatGPT. Looks like building a new YouTube is harder than it sounds. But don't worry, the model is alive and kicking on various platforms. I usually access it via Artlist, which aggregates some of the best video models in one place.

I use Sora 2 mostly for cinematic sequences where motion and realism matter and would call that its absolute strengths. It was literally the only model that made my nun breakdance from prompt 2, and it created a beautiful flock of origami sparrows circling a serene lady for prompt 3. Not perfect, but noticeably better than the other AI video models. As always, I show you the first generation so you get the true picture.

Who is Sora 2 for?

Sora 2 is great for anyone working with generative video and AI in a creative way. It depicts humans so well that it makes sense why OpenAI built the Sora app around it. The videos look so real that humans doing incredible things in the clips don't come across as a cameo at all -- they feel like genuine footage. So if you want to generate lifelike footage with realistic scenes, Sora 2 is a strong pick. The breakdancing nun I mentioned earlier is good proof of complex movements and possibly crowds of people. That said, I'm not sure I'd suggest Sora 2 as a standalone model for my target audience, small business owners. My guess is that most would rather have access to various models at once, plus the ability to add graphics, filters, and effects on top. And for social media creators, being locked into just one model can feel like too tight a corset -- in general, you want flexibility.

How I tested Sora 2

I test AI video models the same way every time: same prompts, first generation only, no tweaking.

For my 6-model comparison on Artlist I put Sora 2 up against Kling 3.0, Veo 3.1, Wan 2.7, LTX 2 Pro and Runway 4.5 across four prompts. Each prompt was designed to stress-test something different: multishot and text rendering, complex human motion with crowd dynamics and audio, cinematic scene-building, and start-to-end frame consistency.

Sora 2 won two out of four. It was the only model that generated an actual breakdancing nun for prompt 2, not a nun swaying awkwardly like all the others, an actual breakdancing nun. And for prompt 3 it produced the most beautiful and serene origami bird scene of the bunch.

My overall takeaway from that test: Sora 2 is the most well-rounded model for complex scenes with crowds, atmosphere and native audio. Its first generations are consistently the most usable.

How I tested Sora 2 vs Veo 3
In my Sora 2 vs Veo 3 head-to-head I had done earlier, I narrowed the field to just the two strongest competitors and tested for realism, motion and cinematic quality. Veo 3 is one of Sora's strongest competitors for this area and the comparison was close in places. It ended in a dead tie on points, but Sora 2 pulled ahead on realism and human motion while Veo 3 took the win on aesthetic beauty.

My Sora 2 Pros

- Creates some of the most beautiful and cinematic scenes I've seen from any AI video model -- compositions feel considered rather than generated

- Best for complex human motion -- the breakdancing nun is proof, no other model came close

- Humans look genuinely realistic: expressions, body language, crowd dynamics all handled better than the competition

- Doesn't have that too-polished, too-perfect AI look that gives most generated videos away -- the output has texture and feels alive

- Character consistency across multiple shots -- props, faces and camera angles stay coherent, which most models still can't pull off

- Good for beginners -- you don't have to be an advanced prompt engineer to get solid results on the first try

My Sora 2 Cons

- No start-to-end frame support -- only start frame, and even then it can get confused with the transformation

- For my taste it adds too many background noises -- weird unprompted space sounds, random background comments, things I didn't ask for

- Sometimes adds too much movement and can almost look erratic -- when you just wanted a calm, steady shot

- Free tier is gone since January 2026 -- credits run out fast, especially at higher resolutions, so costs add up quickly

Genuinely free access to Sora 2 is limited -- the free tier on ChatGPT was removed in January 2026. But there are a couple of good ways to Sora 2 free before paying anything:

My Tips on How to Use Sora 2

Keep motion to one action per shot As I mentioned in my test results, Sora tends to get erratic when you ask too much of it at once. For prompt 1 I wanted the background to move AND a slow motion handshake at the same time - that seemed to overload it completely. Keep each shot simple and work with editing different clips together instead of trying to cram everything into one generation.

Specify if you don't want camera movement
Sora 2 loves adding cinematic camera movement by default. If you want a calm, static shot, say so explicitly in your prompt -- otherwise you'll get movement you didn't ask for.

Use negative prompts to stay in control
Sora generally tends to add things you didn't ask for: camera movements, extra human motion, background audio and even protagonists saying things you never prompted. To prevent this, add a negative prompt specifying what you don't want -- no background SFX, no dialogue, no additional characters. It's a bit annoying, but less annoying than wasting credits on unprompted stuff.

My Sora 2 FAQ

Did Sora 2 close down? No. The Sora social media platform -- the TikTok-style app OpenAI built around the model -- was shut down. But the Sora 2 video generation model itself is still very much alive and available on various platforms including Artlist, Synthesia and sora.com for paid subscribers.

Where can I access Sora 2 for free? The easiest way to get access to Sora 2 for free is through Artlist -- you get one free video generation on signup. Synthesia's AI Playground also lets you try it for free without an invitation code or waitlist.

Is Sora 2 on Artlist the same quality as the official version? Yes. Artlist integrates the official Sora 2 model directly, so the quality of your ai-generated videos is identical to what you'd get going through OpenAI. The difference is that Artlist gives you access to multiple video generation models in one place, which is why I use it over accessing Sora 2 directly.

What does Sora 2 still struggle with? Sora 2 still struggles with start to end frame transformations -- it only supports a start frame, not an end frame, and even then it can get confused. Generation limits kick in fast at higher resolutions, and longer videos above 20-25 seconds aren't possible even on Pro. Complex motion across multiple shots can also get erratic if the prompt isn't specific enough.

What resolution does Sora 2 generate in? The standard model generates at 720p. The Pro version goes up to 1080p. Keep in mind that generation limits and credit costs scale with resolution, so starting at 720p for testing makes sense before moving to higher quality for final outputs.

Is Sora 2 good for short films? Yes, it's one of the stronger video generation models for cinematic short clips and short films. Its object permanence, lifelike human motion and complex motion handling make it feel more like real footage than most other ai video generators. Just keep the generation limits in mind -- you're working with short clips rather than longer videos.
