‘With AI, practically anything is possible in the future’

Interview with AI Author and Lecturer Jenny Habermehl

Not much I have to say about this incredibly talented designer, author (KI für Kreative, one of the best books on image generation) and lecturer on AI, because she does a pretty good job introducing herself during the interview.

But I may add that Jenny has also written her master's thesis on AI and Design and, therefore, isn't one to jump on the AI bandwagon just now.

So, of course, I was curious about what this experienced AI allrounder had to say and how she would answer the same questions we had previously asked all other guests.

The Interview

What's your job and how does it involve AI?

I am a freelance graphic designer, photographer, and teach at a college. Additionally, I am an author on AI & design and offer workshops and lectures on the subject.

As a lecturer at the college, I naturally incorporate my knowledge about AI into subjects like typography, idea generation, and research. Therefore, AI plays a significant role in my daily life, as I am almost daily engaged with it to help other creatives get familiar with AI tools and find ways to integrate them into their professional routines. I enjoy finding new ways to use AI for creative purposes.

What's the craziest thing about AI you've heard so far?

Supposedly, threatening consequences or promising tips can generate better responses from ChatGPT. Either the programmers have a great sense of humor and have incorporated this, or it's a myth. This contributes significantly to the humanization of these AI tools and makes no sense from a technical perspective. But who knows? Try it out and write to me about whether it has worked for you.

Which AI tool do you personally use the most?

For daily and creative tasks, I prefer to use ChatGPT and for images, Midjourney.

How much time do you approximately save daily by using AI tools?

I can't put it into numbers, but my feeling is that I can enter into creative projects more quickly and easily, and as a result, I can engage with them more deeply than before. The same goes for photo editing: the time I previously spent on retouching, I now use it for the creative design of the images.

Do you prefer: ChatGPT or Gemini?

Since I have been using ChatGPT for a longer time, I am naturally more familiar with it and find creating my own GPTs and image generation very convenient. However, I am increasingly working with Gemini, as ChatGPT sometimes refuses to work or has problems with accessibility.

What area should AI enthusiasts keep an eye on in the near future?

Those who want to work sustainably with AI should acquire a lot of knowledge about the technology behind it. Only those who understand how AI is developed and functions can develop new and individual applications for it in the future. It's completely useless to look at what everyone else is doing and try to replicate that. AI tools can be adapted to humans, and in the future, we will develop our own tools for all kinds of ideas. Emulating others only holds one back.

Any tips, tricks or hacks regarding the use of AI?

Start simple before you spend hours agonizing over a prompt. And experiment, continuously test limits, and persevere. AI tools and their usage are very complex due to the new way of working with them, and each model has its own strengths and weaknesses, which are constantly changing. Therefore, keep calm, proceed step by step, and have lots of fun experimenting and getting to know them.

What AI tool should be invented for you?

I would like to have an AI assistant on all my devices that supports me and learns from me. It will definitely take over all the tedious administrative tasks for me and keep me updated about my projects. It can also support me in my private life, helping me achieve a better work-life balance.

Love or hate: Technology smarter than humans aka AGI?

An AGI can be fantastic or our downfall. It's not the AI itself that scares me, but rather the people who might misuse it. I find technology exciting, but I also respect it. Especially in the wrong hands, a lot of damage can be done.

Do you believe AI will bring a bigger technological revolution than the internet?

Absolutely. AI breaks through all the limits imposed by previous software and technology. With AI, practically anything is possible in the future; it's just a matter of time. Together with the internet, because without it, it would be pointless again. Hopefully, both together will sustainably improve all our lives.

Who'll make the race for spearheading AI in 10 years?

Hopefully, it will be the companies that place value on ethics and copyrights and care about the welfare of humanity. Thanks to AI, such companies can emerge and grow quickly. We will see; I am excited!

Is AI more of a chance or a challenge for humanity?

Both. The opportunities lie in the advancement of humanity in technology, research, creativity, and much more. The challenge will be to make AI fair for everyone and to find ways to prevent or limit the misuse of this technology.
